Keep Your Newborn Cool in the Summertime
Keeping a newborn cool in the summertime is important to ensure their comfort and safety. Newborns are more susceptible to heat-related issues. It is essential to take some precautions. Here are some tips to help you keep your newborn cool during hot weather:
Dress appropriately
Dress your baby in lightweight, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing. Choose natural fabrics like cotton that allow air circulation and wick away moisture. Avoid dressing them in too many layers to prevent overheating.
Use a fan or air conditioning
If you have air conditioning, use it to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. If you don’t have AC, consider using fans to improve air circulation. Make sure to place the fan at a safe distance from the baby and not directly blowing on them.
Find shade outdoors
If you need to go outside, seek shade and avoid direct sunlight. Use a stroller with a sunshade or attach a lightweight muslin cloth or breathable cover to protect your baby from the sun and keep your newborn cool.
Stay hydrated
Offer your baby breast milk or formula regularly. Newborns can get dehydrated quickly in hot weather. If you are breastfeeding, it’s essential to stay hydrated yourself.
Use lightweight blankets
If you swaddle your baby, use a lightweight, breathable blanket made of natural fibers. Avoid heavy or synthetic materials that may trap heat.
Keep the nursery cool
Ensure the baby’s sleeping area is well-ventilated and not too warm. You can use a room thermometer to monitor the temperature and make sure it stays in a comfortable range (between 68°F to 72°F or 20°C to 22°C).
Limit outdoor activities
Avoid extended periods outdoors during the hottest parts of the day. If you have to be outside, a portable fan is a great idea. Avoid direct sunlight because the FDA recommends not to use sunscreen on babies under 6 months of age.
Monitor for signs of overheating
Watch for signs of overheating. Signs to watch for include flushed skin, rapid breathing, excessive sweating, or irritability. If you notice any of these signs, take immediate steps to cool down the baby.
Use a cool cloth
If your baby seems warm, you can gently dab their forehead, neck, and armpits with a cool, damp cloth (not cold) to help them feel more comfortable.
Remember, newborns are vulnerable to heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heatstroke. If you suspect your baby is experiencing heat-related distress, seek medical attention immediately. During the hot summer months, its key to think ahead to ensure your newborn stays cool and comfortable.
