Photographer Must-Haves: Cyber Monday Edition

The equipment that a professional photographer needs can vary depending on their specialization and personal preferences. However, here’s a list of “photographer must-haves” that are commonly important for many professional photographers, along with a few of my faves.

Camera Body

A high-quality camera body that suits the photographer’s needs and preferences is a given. This might be a full-frame DSLR, mirrorless camera, or medium format camera. I use the Canon EOS R5 Full-Frame Mirrorless.

Lenses

Many photographers have a selection of lenses for different purposes. Options could include a prime lens for portraits, a wide-angle lens for landscapes, and a telephoto lens for capturing distant subjects. The Canon RF 35mm lens is my go to for most of what I shoot in the studio.

Camera Bag

A durable and well-organized camera bag to safely transport and protect the camera, lenses, and other accessories is a helpful item to have. This backpack camera bag is a great option for on the go.

External Flash and Lighting Equipment

Another must-have item is a good lighting system. External flash units and lighting equipment for controlling and enhancing lighting in various shooting conditions is essential. I use the Godox AD400 Pro system. The Godox AD200 is also a good option.

Camera Accessories

There are additional accessories like lens filters, lens hoods, and lens cleaning kits that you can add to your toolbox. All of these items will help to improve image quality and protect equipment.

Camera Strap

A comfortable and secure camera strap for carrying the camera during long shoots without causing strain. There are many fun options out there to show off your personality!

Camera Cleaning Kit

A cleaning kit is a must-have for your photography tool box. Cleaning tools for maintaining the cleanliness of the camera sensor, lenses, and other components are essential.

Memory Cards and Storage

Every photographer needs high-capacity and fast memory cards for storing a large number of high-resolution images. External hard drives or cloud storage for backup are must-haves. The SanDisk Extreme Pro memory cards are my favorite.

Editing Software

Professional photo editing software such as Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop for post-processing and enhancing images is essential for any photographer.

Remember that the specific models and brands of these items can vary based on personal preferences, budget constraints, and the type of photography. Photographers also often invest in ongoing education and workshops to continually improve their skills and stay updated on the latest trends and technologies in the field.
